What did he know of orchards, maybe once as a child, something to do with Halloween and a family outing or there was that road behind what they called the upper pasture that nobody ever used, he would walk it to the Old Barn, passing through what could have once been an orchard but now displayed more as a sculpture garden but it was quiet and dappled and he could sit on a low, Autumn branch for hours before heading for the forbidden dangers of that ancient, crumbling structure, this being long before reading Irving’s Cider House Rules or maybe The Wizard of Oz could become involved as the drugs took effect but more in a David Lynch apocrypha yet not excluding any detailed analyses by Rushdie and others which could get us into Alice’s looking glass as his orchards now produce the fruits of pinecones and acorns which seem bounty enough for the small beasts.
